A lot of people are very relieved that the Tories lost, but unfortunately Labour is not the party for the workers it used to be. They have already raised the spectre of means testing pensions (article soon) and further privatisation of the NHS, and seem keen to put 'the economy' ahead of investing in the people.

While we are watching them, some of the media bandwidth will be taken up watching the Tories, as they yet again fight among themselves and compete for the leadership and blame everyone but themselves (or if they do blame themselves, it is for the wrong thing). I hope this article will help anyone who chooses to watch the leadeship race. And it may be worth doing so.

If Labour has inherited insurmountable problems or act as Tory 2.0, they are likely to lose at the next election (their win was nowhere near as convincing as the number of seats won suggests, as I wrote recently.

The Democrats did a similar thing as your Labour Party because of our money-is-everything political system. The so-called centrist Democrat/centrist Republican (a dead animal now) perpetually sought out comprise where there should be none. And then it became Democrats kowtowing to Republicans with nothing in return. Eventually, the right fell off the cliff and the Democrats were pulled center-right.

We have been locked up by republicans because of their thin majority-margin in Congress. Sinema & Manchin are republicans who pretended to be Democrats, so there never was a solid majority for the Dems. The court system is locked up as well. Democrats (I am a lifelong Dem, although my preferred label is the same as Bernie’s…Democratic Socialist) I consider capitalism to be in failure. Democrats have become true experts in grabbing defeat from the hands of victory.

Since when do we follow orders from people who attempted a deadly coup? 2020 that’s when. Arrests should have been made, questions asked later.

Starmer sounds more like our Bill Clinton than a supporter for the people. But it is a step away from conservative rule and a kick in the teeth to the Tories, so good for that.

The sad thing for the US is that we have laws to apply to domestic terrorists, seditionists, felons. But they are not laws for the wealthy. We are steeped in a massive psychosis of people who are easy to manipulate by the press.

In the US, the people have voted for a Democrat as president, over and over again. But our king-selector, aka, electoral college removes our voices/our votes! Al Gore won the popular AND electoral college. The biggest mistake in history was letting that go. Allowing him to withdrawal. We, the Dems, should have been the ones in the streets with pitchforks and torches! But instead, the Dems never addressed the electoral college when they could have.

I hope there are people who can pressure Starmer to shift left! And of course, people will have to keep the pressure on.

The shift to the right here happened when Maggie Thatcher destroyed the miner's union and there when Ronald Reagan destroyed PATCO. The left wing parties lost their main source of funds and sold their souls to big business. Bernie Sanders proved that these days it is possible to get money direct from the people, but for them is is too late, they sold out and bought in to the billionaires' POV. They don't even realise how far they have shifted from their roots - they see their old position as extreme, now.

Here, too, laws are shifting more and more against the people and for the rich. But it has always been so. The PTB have had protesters shot time and time again over the millennia.

Thatcher & Reagan…2 peas in a pod. Two bastards in a pod more like! Reagan not only fired the air traffic controllers, he banned them from being rehired. That’s when union busting started in earnest again! So many died decades before trying to form unions. As is happening now, Reagan undermined their bargaining power. Our rich are multi-BILLIONAIRES. A status I think should be illegal!

We are seeing some growth in unions again, but there is so much $$$ to fight against..

As an American, I truly appreciate the details here. I know elections were on July 4 and have heard many discussions about Starmer that weren’t especially flattering. I am so happy to hear about the conservative losses.

You know what we’re facing here in the US. No arrests for SCOTUS violating the constitution or for the formerly installed psychopathic, seditionist-inciter, 34-count felon, rapist, domestic terrorist. No calls for him to step aside even.

I hope we can leave the Fascists in a state of shock by wiping them off the map in Nov. It’s a big challenge with a right wing media and fossil fuel money.

I can’t give up hope. Just can’t. Because the other possibility is our demise.

As for America, what I would like to see - though it will never happen - is for Biden to use his new immunity to clear out the Augean stables of SCOTUS and Trump and other impediments to democracy and then be the sacrificial lamb and stand down. The fallout for Democrats would be too great, but it would be like lancing a boil, a great relief.

A dream come true! Republicans would immediately take full advantage of this immunity and reverse everything the other party did. But we can’t count of Dems to have the much needed temerity to help their base and show us we are supported! Arrests should have been made for the constitution violators on SCOTUS as well as their strong ties to the coup!!! In addition, the right wing buy-out of the media and their lies that result in direct harm should be categorized as a terrorist groups as well as Heritage Foundation. Biden should slap that on them now! I’m not sure who raises my blood pressure more, the republicans or the Democrats! Republicans for being Fascists and Democrats for their timidity on the seriousness of the situation.

Regarding Biden. He has some impressive accomplishments I will print. The Democrats are NOT the kind of people who come together at the last minute of a presidential campaign and say…oh yes! We’ll ALL back this person instead. I believe that would be fatal to the Democrats. Biden has a good administration and I’d rather do house-cleaning after we fully eliminate Trump. Even if Biden went out a year or two later, we’d have his VP step in. And we MUST get a true majority in Congress to defeat Fascism. Too much focus is on Biden, none on the 34-count felon/rapist/sedition-inciter. Just what the right wants!

Here are some things Biden has done despite republican blockades. Bernie was my candidate in 2016 and so there are many frustrations BUT we have what we have!

*Biden passed much needed legislation after trump mangled the pandemic, destroyed the economy and led a deadly INSURRECTION to overthrow the government.

*Biden lowered unemployment from 6.3% to 3.5% and has held the unemployment rate below 4% for the longest period in 50 years!

*Biden created 15 million jobs in a little over 3 years (A Record).

*Bidenomics grew the economy at 3.1% last year and reduced inflation to 1.9% from 9%.

*Biden cut child poverty in half through the American Rescue Plan

*Re-joined the Paris Agreement to fight Climate Change

*Provided $10k-$20k college debt relief for those who earn under $125k/yr.

*Biden passed the first gun safety legislation in thirty years.

The following legislation was also passed during Biden's first term:

*bipartisan Infrastructure legislation

*The Electoral Count Act

*Science and CHIPS Act

*Respect for Marriage Act

*American Rescue Plan

*PACT Act (expands VA health benefits)

*Inflation Reduction Act (2022)

*Biden cracked down on junk fees

*Banned non-competes for workers

*Banned medical debt from Credit Reports

*Capped drug prices for seniors

*Expanded overtime pay

*Capped credit card fees

The Trump cult would scream that it was rigged if Biden used his immunity against them, of course. But they scream that anyway. But if Dems did it more people would believe MAGA. Only the MAGA cult believe MAGA claims at the moment.

But it really is time that the right wing was hoist with its own petard and made to pay for their misdeeds.

And of course, if he was so inclined, he COULD rig it so that the right wing never won again, just as the right wing and their project 2025 plan for the dems to never win again.

I really understand the desire of decent politicians to reach across the aisle and work with Republicans. But the Republicans are no longer a political party but a cult, and cannot be reasoned with.

Fully agree. Any politician who wants to “reach across the aisle” when fascists are sitting there, will not get my support…assuming we survive this election.

There is no reasoning with people who are incapable of reason. The republican cult supports a man who is a felon & rapist! The media is equally at fault and equally dangerous.

At the very least, if felons are not allowed to vote in a state, they should not be allowed to hold office.

Expand full comment

Felons are not allowed to hold office in any state that I know of. Definitely not in Texas, Florida, Ohio, Georgia, etcBut their candidate IS a felon. Some people are saying a felon has run for president before! Eugene Debs was a protester against WW1. And the accusation of insubordination was a twisted way to suppress free speech. When people compare that to seditionist-inciter/34-count criminal-convict and rapist, I want to give them a slap across the face.

It is the height of insanity to prevent a felon from holding office in any state but say it’s acceptable for the highest office in the U.S. 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫🤦🏻
